It's based on foods considered to be strong in the sattva guna (Sanskrit - pure quality) and are believed to lead to clarity and equanimity of mind but are also beneficial for the body. A food is considered to be sattvic if it's not contaminated and should not spread evil, suffering or disease. It should purify the surroundings. Sattvic food is one that is healthy, nutritious and should give energy and equilibrium. Sattvic foods are: water, fruit, cereal, most vegetables, bread, beans, nuts, grains, milk and milk derivatives, honey (but this is as long as the animals they come from have been treated well and have been grown in good surrounding, other wise the food becomes non-sattvic).
Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient system of health care that is native to the Indian subcontinent. It is presently in daily use by millions of people in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka. The word "Ayurveda" is a tatpurusha compound of the word ayus meaning "life", "life principle", or "long life" and the word veda, which refers to a system of "knowledge". Thus "Ayurveda" roughly translates as the "knowledge of life", or "knowledge of a long life".
Veganism (also strict or pure vegetarianism) is a philosophy and lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. Vegans do not use or consume animal products of any kind. The most common reasons for becoming a vegan are ethical commitment or moral convictions concerning animal rights, the environment, or human health, and spiritual or religious concerns. Of particular concern are the practices involved in factory farming and animal testing, and the intensive use of land and other resources required for animal farming. Vegan diets are a subset of vegetarian diets, which are credited with lowering the risk of colon cancer, heart attack, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, and stroke. However, vegan diets can be low in levels of calcium, iodine, and vitamins B12 and D. Vegans are therefore encouraged to plan their diet and take dietary supplements as appropriate.
Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes all animal flesh, including poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, and slaughter by-products. There are several variants of the diet, some of which also exclude eggs and/or some products produced from animal labor such as dairy products and honey. Veganism, for example, excludes all animal products from diet and in some definitions from attire also,[2] whether or not the production of clothing or items has involved the actual death of an animal (dairy, eggs, honey, wool, silk, down feathers, etc.).
A generic term for both vegetarianism and veganism as well as for similar diets is "Plant-based diets".
